Curious about making the switch to decaf but wondering how it's made? Here's how Nescafe naturally make their decaf range.

Although coffee has many health benefits, those who make the switch to decaf may notice better sleep and reduced anxiety and it also may help those whose digestion is sensitive to caffeine.

The decaffeinated process doesn't fully remove all caffeine - a typical cup of decaf contains 2mg of caffeine compared to a regular coffee which is between 70-150mg - it is a great way to cut down and improve your health, enjoy coffee at any time of day, or is a perfect choice for those who are more sensitive to caffeine.

With Nescafé favourites such as the original, gold and Azera blends all available as decaf blends, we thought we would take more of a deep dive into how these are made, and the science behind bringing you your favourite taste of coffee that never scrimps on flavour.

The Decaf Process Explained

Of those people who were surveyed by Nescafé last year, 36% stated they were concerned about the process of removing caffeine from their coffee. Historically, this is because the removal process involves harsh chemicals such as methylene chloride and ethyl acetate.

However, all Nescafé Decaf blends are naturally decaffeinated with just water.

But you might be thinking, how is this done, and how is the caffeine removed? Although the process never removed 100% of the caffeine content, each cup of decaf has just 3% caffeine content compared to a regular cup.

The process of decaffeination is simple, so here is a brief overview of how it is done:

  1. First of all the green coffee beans are soaked in water
  2. Water is then circulated so that the caffeine from the beans is extracted
  3. This mixture is then drained and the process is repeated until most of the caffeine is gone
  4. The beans are then soaked again in the decaf water to reabsorb and retain the rich flavour
  5. The decaf beans are then dried ready for roasting and used in all of the Nescafé Decaf blends

As you can see, there is no chemical process involved in making the Nescafé decaf range, as water is used to remove all of the caffeine.

You can enjoy decaffeinated Nescafé blends across the range including original, Gold, Azera and even with the convenience of stick packs for all those coffee cravings you may have on the go.
